Sing Me a Fable › Play Me Arcade › F
F is for Frivolity
Gary the Grasshopper
A fiddle all summer, and a cold wind with nothing stored away.
What happens in it
Gary fiddles and dances all summer while Annie stores food for winter. When the cold wind comes, Gary has nothing. Twice a level you choose what Gary does, and it plays out.
Choose what he does
Each level has two scenes. Two things Gary could do appear, and you pick one.
Nothing is timed and there is no going back - whichever you pick plays out.
The last scene has only one thing to do: once the work is done, play the song.
Tap a card, or use the left and right arrow keys.
The three levels
- Song Before Winter — The Fiddle and the Acorn, then Carrying the Seeds
- The Cold Wind — The Stores Are Bare, then Knocking in the Cold
- The Sweet Winter Song — Sweeping the Halls, then The Winter Song
Why frivolity is one of the twenty-six
Sing Me a Fable is an alphabet of faults, one for every letter, from Aggression to Zealotry. F is frivolity, and this is the playable half of that fable: the child makes the choice the animal makes, and watches what it costs. Nobody explains the moral afterwards, which is the whole point of a fable and the reason the form has lasted two and a half thousand years.
Every letter has one: twenty-six fables, twenty-six faults, twenty-six games. See the whole arcade, or take the twenty-six colouring posters and Find the Error sheets free.
